How we’ve grown

Since 1898 West Shore Bank has grown and evolved to meet the changing needs of the west shore community.

Year Event
1898 State Savings Bank of Scottville was founded in Scottville, MI on June 30, 1898.  The first Board of Directors meeting was held in Detroit on July 25, 1898.  The Directors were C.W. McPhail, President, M.L. Willliams, C.A. McPhail, H. G. Flint and M.A. Flint.  The Bank first occupied a one story brick building on the west side of Main Street.  C.W. McPhail was the first President of the Bank.  Total resources were $17,000. 
1902 The new Bank building was built on the corner of State and Main Street.  The Bank occupied this building until 1969.
1910 Total Bank assets reached $168,000.
1920 Total Bank assets were $644,000.
1937 Acquired the Security Bank of Walkerville office.
1940 Bank assets were $864,000.
1948 Bank celebrated it's 50th birthday.  Robert Smith, son of Robert J. Smith, was elected as Bank President.
1950 Bank assets reached $3,690,000.
1953 Acquired the Fountain State Bank office.
1960 Bank assets were $7,529,000.
1965 Trust department was added.
1966 Formed West Shore Computer Services, Inc.
1969 Opened new main office in Scottville at 107 W. State Street.
1970 Bruce Draper was elected Bank President, succeeding Robert Smith.  Bank assets were $21,806,000.
1976 Opened the East Ludington office.  Charles S. Chisholm became President of the Bank.
1979 Thomas A. VanBuren was elected Bank President upon Chisholm's retirement.
1980 Bank assets were $39,846,000.
1981 Formed locally-owned, locally-controlled West Shore Bank Corporation (Holding Company).  Introduced the first ATM service in Mason County.
1990 Bank assets were $73,985,000.
1992 Acquired the Ludington branch of Great Lakes Bank Corporation, which would be the new site of the downtown Ludington office.
1996 Formed State Street Insurance Agency, Inc.
1997 Name changed to West Shore Bank.  Opened the Hart office.  Bank assets reached $115,000,000.
1998 Bank celebrated its centennial in July.
1999 Opened the Manistee-Parkdale office.
2000 Bank assets were $206,000,000.
2002 Grand opening of the new downtown (main) office in Ludington.
2008 Opened the Manistee-South office.
2009 Raymond A. Biggs was elected Bank President upon Van Buren's retirement.
2010 Bank assets were $335,000,000.
2015 Opened Commercial Loan office in Muskegon.
2016 Acquired West Michigan Bank & Trust, providing Frankfort office.  Bank assets were $426,000,000.
2017 Opened Mortgage Loan and Wealth Management office in Traverse City.  Expanded Wealth Management services to Muskegon and Grand Rapids.
2018 Opened office in Onekama.
